Getting to "Win-Win" - Creating a Food Safety Plan that Works for YOUR organization!

In my travels as Sales Manager for Cherney Microbiological Services, it is my pleasure to speak with food safety professionals from companies of varying sizes and industries.  In the last few years, FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) has taken a prominent role in our discussions of what is coming down the pipeline.  Many large companies have established food safety plans and follow SQF, HACCP (or HARPC) or other programs of which regular product and environmental testing is already an integral component.  This blog is not for those companies.  This blog is for companies whose food safety programs haven’t caught up to the regulatory environment we find ourselves in.

If you are a Quality Manager who feels that your department is viewed by top management at your company as little more than an expense or if you are new to your position and looking for help, then I’m talking to you, too!

Keeping & Encouraging Employee Engagement

"Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success." Those are words by Henry Ford; they still have meaning today for all of us.

Engagement and Empowerment are part of today’s culture.  Giving employee’s the opportunity to provide input on decisions and work processes within the company not only engages and empowers the employee, but also gives them a sense of worth and contribution. It instills confidence to think outside of the box and offer up their ideas.
There are so many things that can be said about keeping employees and engaging them. Involvement by everyone in Lean efforts helps support our foundational vision of a High Performance Team Based Culture.  It creates the environment where everyone has input in what we do and we takes great pride in celebrating successes together as a team.

"All Aboard!" - Jump on the Cherney College Train Today!

At Cherney College, we’re catching our breath after a busy few months of training activities! We launched our 2016 training courses in a BIG way, holding five courses in five weeks. Three of the courses were brand new for this year, including Plate Interpretation, Food Safety for Suppliers and FSPCA Preventive Controls for Human Food course, which certifies Preventive Controls Qualified Individuals for FSMA. These courses were a lot of fun, and here’s a sample of what attendees are saying about our 2016 courses.

In the Spirit of Giving - Thank you!

With the holidays upon us, we tend to get into the spirit of giving!  Holiday shopping, baking treats to share with family and friends, and generally, presents galore!  This year, as in years past, the "Cherney Micro Family" has chosen a family within our community to assist this holiday season through the Salvation Army.  Our Training Room is beginning to fill with amazing generosity for this family and it is our pleasure to give them a celebration they will not soon forget!

Food Safety Workshops, Continuing Education and Training

I am frequently asked why I think basic education, continuing education and technical training is important and how it benefits both company and employee.   It’s the continuous improvement ‘bones’ in me that makes me not only want to improve myself, but improve others around me.  I think that’s done through knowledge and learning and that’s why I feel so strongly about education and training.   At Cherney, we’ve always been a group of geeky learners (note the picture of "Sid the Science Kid" from PBS who I watch with my 2.5 year old granddaughter).  We all just can’t seem to get enough!
