Estimated Turn Around Time

Petrifilm: 24 hours
Spread Plate: 48 hours
MPN: 96 hours

Method Description

Samples are prepared and dilutions made. The samples are then plated on media and incubated based on method specifications. After incubation plates are read and results generated based on countable range.

Additional Information

Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic pathogen that can cause a wide spectrum of infections, from superficial skin infections to severe illness. When present in food, staph aureus could contaminate the product with a toxin, causing staphylococcal food-borne disease.
This procedure enumerates the number of staphylococcus in a sample using a spread plate, petrifilm or MPN (Most Probable Number) method.
